The Free Profit Filter Scorecard

Your handmade idea might be charming. The question is whether it'll actually pay you.

Take the free 5-minute Scorecard and find out if your product idea is built to pay you a proper hourly rate, or quietly trap you at £4.80 an hour like mine did.

Free · 15 questions · Less than 5 minutes · Your score emailed straight to you

15 short questions. One clear verdict.

You'll answer 15 quick questions about your product idea across the five filters that decide whether a handmade product is actually profitable: Demand, Margins, Competition, Positioning, and Scalability.

Most people finish in under 5 minutes. At the end, you'll see your score for each filter and an overall verdict on whether to launch, refine, or reconsider your idea.

By the end, you'll know:

  • Whether your product idea has real demand, or you've just convinced yourself it does
  • The honest margin maths most handmade sellers skip until it's too late
  • How saturated your category actually is, and whether you can stand out in it
  • The positioning hook that makes your product feel essential, not optional
  • Whether your idea can scale past the "every sale is exhausting" stage

No guessing. No spreadsheets. Just a clear answer in 5 minutes.

Why I built this

Lara, founder of Launch Your Handmade, in her work studio wearing a floral knotted headband

I'm Lara, the founder of Launch Your Handmade. Before this, I built a six-figure handmade business in hair accessories, selling across Etsy, eBay, Shopify, and Amazon. I hit Top 0.3% of UK Etsy sellers.

And I was still earning £4.80 an hour.

I built the Handmade Profit Filter after I sat down and worked out what I was actually being paid for each sale. Once I saw the number, I reverse-engineered what makes a handmade product genuinely profitable, not just selling. That framework became this Scorecard.

If you're working hard on something that isn't paying you back, you don't have a hustle problem. You have a product choice problem. This Scorecard will tell you whether that's true for your idea.

What the Scorecard is built on

The five filters aren't arbitrary. They map directly to the documented reasons businesses fail.

The research

According to CB Insights' research on hundreds of failed companies, the three biggest reasons businesses don't make it are:

  • 42% fail because there's no real market demand for what they're selling
  • 19% fail because they get outcompeted
  • 18% fail because of pricing and cost issues that erode margins

That's three out of the five filters in this Scorecard, backed by data on what actually kills businesses. The other two (Positioning and Scalability) come from patterns I've seen working with hundreds of handmade sellers.

What this means for your idea

The average Etsy seller makes a median of just $574 a month in revenue. After fees, materials, and platform costs, the take-home is closer to minimum wage, often less. The Scorecard tells you in 15 questions whether your product idea is set up to beat that average, or quietly join it.
